Rice Continuing Education Notice

If you're in my course at Rice University's Suzanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, Writing for Marketing and Public Relations, please note that we will be covering writing for broadcast media on May 4th, rather than how to write sales material (as was originally planned). We will be covering sales material on the last class, May 11th.

Fresh Downloads for Rice Students

I’ve FINALLY updated the Downloads section of this website. So if you’re in my course, Writing for Marketing and Public Relations at Rice University’s Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, you’ll find all of the presentations and handouts from class there.

Each folder covers a different class, so the first class materials are in the first folder, etc. And, once again, thanks for killing an otherwise perfectly good evening once a week learning to be a better architect of evil corporate propaganda!

Writing for Marketing and Public Relations Course

I’m psyched that so many people have signed up for my class at the Suzanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University. It’s a Seven Wednesdays, March 24-May 5, 2010, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Sewell Hall on the Rice campus starting tonight.

I’ll be giving attendees all the tools and insights they need to write effective copy for the Web, advertisements, brochures, public relations materials and more. The course will include interactive assignments, recommended readings, optional writing assignments and the examination of riotously poor examples of writing.

If you’re one of those who have already signed up: thanks! Email me and tell me a little about yourself and what you most want to get from the class.

TRIVIA: There is a wall on campus that makes an amazingly frog-like sound when you run your finger across it. My wife and I ran across when we did the Urban Dare race a few months ago.

Shout Out to Fifth Ring Aberdeen

One of the great things about what I do is that I can do it for people all over the world. And I love doing international work. My projects have brought me to Scotland, all over Europe and Scandinavia, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and even beautiful Beaumont, Texas (joke).

Special thanks to international client Fifth Ring, whose spot in Europe’s energy capital and super knowledge of the global energy industry have earned them a lot of clients—and my personal respect. Thanks for including me in a recent project and good luck in 2010.

If you’re outside the United States and need a U.S. copywriter you can count on, reach out. If you’re a Nigerian PhD Barrister who just needs some bank details to earn me a big, fat cut in your 40,000,000 transfer of funds please remember I’m a writer. My bank details wouldn’t buy you a bottle of MOPA.

Big Thanks to Wood Group

Special thanks to Scotland's Wood Group and Houston-based Mustang Engineering for putting me on their Preferred Vendor List, and for all of the great projects over the last few years. Your business is very much appreciated.

Wood Group is an international energy services company with around $5 billion in sales operating in 50 countries. It has three businesses: Engineering and Production Facilities, Well Support and Gas Turbine Services.

But did you also know they were in the Renewable Energy business? Since I’ve done a lot of that type work with companies like Standard Renewable Energy and Imperium Renewables, it was a great fit when its Mustang Engineering unit hired me to write a brochure for its ability to support biofuel initiatives.

Trivia: Scotland, where the Wood Group home company is headquartered, used to put a tax on sunlight by taxing homeowners per window. Nobody tell Obama. Apparently, you could file for an exemption.
