Circa 1960–1963 Maxim's Restaurant Matchcover

$17.00

Some restaurants become famous because the food is extraordinary.

Others because famous people eat there.

Maxim's managed both.

For decades, Maxim's stood among Houston's premier fine-dining restaurants, a place where birthdays became celebrations, anniversaries became traditions and business lunches quietly evolved into million-dollar conversations over wine and dessert.

This wasn't casual dining.

This was jackets.

White tablecloths.

Professional waiters who somehow seemed to appear exactly when your water glass reached half empty.

The menu reflected Houston's growing sophistication. Beautifully prepared steaks, fresh Gulf seafood, elegant French-inspired dishes and desserts that encouraged everyone at the table to say, "Well...we've come this far."

Restaurants like Maxim's represented a different era of dining.

People dressed up.

Reservations mattered.

Dinner wasn't squeezed between errands. It was the evening's event.

Which brings us to this matchbook cover.

Guests slipped matchbooks into blazer pockets, handbags and Mercedes ashtrays without a second thought. They weren't intended to become collectibles. They were simply one final courtesy before the valet brought your car around.

Fortunately, someone resisted throwing this one away. Well, the cover made it anyway. The matches have long since disappeared like a shrimp cocktail in a party of five.

But the cover is a tremendous snapshot of the Maxim’s of the day, with a hand-illustrated Eiffel Tower, wine bottle, grape vines and deep burgundy color make for a great display piece. And check out the exchange phone number CA 7-9595. Wild, huh? That puts it somewhere around late 1950s or early to mid-1960s Houston.

This original matchbook cover remains in very good overall condition with light wear on the edges. The graphics and color remain clean and sharp, while the overall presentation makes it an elegant display piece for anyone who remembers Houston's golden age of independent fine dining.

Houston's restaurant scene has always evolved. New places arrive. Old favorites disappear. But a few names linger in conversation long after the last table has been cleared. Maxim's is one of those names, and this little matchbook is a handsome reminder of an evening when dinner was still an occasion.
