Old San Francisco Steak House Hourglass Beer Glass

$29.00

For generations of Houstonians, Old San Francisco Steak House was a place where birthdays turned into traditions, business deals were toasted over cold beer, and first dates unfolded beneath the famous red velvet swing that soared over the dining room. This distinctive hourglass beer glass is a small but unmistakable reminder of one of Houston's most beloved dining institutions.

The restaurant opened in 1970 on Westheimer and quickly became one of the city's signature destinations. Equal parts steakhouse, saloon, and showpiece, it was known for generous portions, sawdust-on-the-floor charm, live piano music, and an atmosphere that somehow managed to be both upscale and unapologetically fun. Long before themed restaurants became fashionable, Old San Francisco had already perfected the art of creating an experience people remembered long after the last bite of prime rib.

This place wasn’t far from our house, so my family always liked to go there. Back in the day, I never actually knew about the narrative of the place. The premise of the restaurant was quite romantic, actually: a Texas Ranger named Tony Taylor who rode into San Francisco to capture a fugitive from justice and fell in love with a woman named Gussie Lee who swore she would come to Texas so they could be together. But on the way to Texas, her stagecoach was attacked and, sadly, she would never see the Lone Star State. So it had this whole backstory. Who knew?

The restaurant blended quality food with unapologetic showmanship, making it a favorite destination for birthdays, anniversaries, business dinners and special occasions. It started in San Antonio, and they had locations here as well as Austin and Dallas. All eventually closed, but someone purchased the San Antonio location as a venue for weddings and the like. The site of the Houston location is now a SuperTarget, which hardly seems like an upgrade.

Still, one outstanding piece of Old San Francisco Steak House history remains. This beautifully shaped beer glass captures the spirit of the place perfectly. Its elegant hour-glass silhouette feels distinctly of its era—substantial in the hand yet refined enough to elevate an ordinary lager into something worth lingering over. The bold Old San Francisco logo instantly transports collectors back to evenings filled with sizzling steaks, overflowing salad bars, and waiters weaving through packed dining rooms balancing trays of frosted mugs. For me it was how they just gave you a big block of aged Swiss cheese to start. Welcome to dinner, here’s a massive piece of cheese while we pour your beer. What’s not to like about that?

Whether displayed alongside Houston restaurant memorabilia, vintage barware, or simply used to enjoy your favorite beer, it's a piece that tells a story every time it's raised. Restaurants come and go, but a few become landmarks. Old San Francisco Steak House earned that distinction here in Houston.

I wish I'd taken pics the times we went there. The building itself was memorable, with Victorian-style architecture, stained glass, wagon wheels, fireplaces and elaborate Old West décor. It was more like a set from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance than a restaurant.

This vintage beer glass remains in very good vintage condition, with crisp graphics and only light signs of age and use consistent with decades of careful enjoyment. Because some souvenirs don't just remind you of a meal—they remind you of an era. And maybe an actress on a swing.
