Vargo's Matchbook

$29.95

If Houston had a Mount Rushmore of classic restaurants, Vargo's would deserve serious consideration. And rather than a president’s face carved into granite, it would probably be a peacock. Eating caviar or something.

Opened in 1965 by restaurateur Johnny Carrabba and partners, Vargo's became one of Houston's most iconic dining destinations. Generations of Houstonians celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, engagements and business victories there.

The food was good. Prime rib. Fresh seafood. Filets. Tableside preparations. Desserts that somehow found room after enormous dinners. But that’s not why people went to Vargo’s. People went for the venue.

The restaurant sat beside a lake complete with swans, ducks, peacocks and a huge lawn with lush landscaping and water features. Dining there felt less like eating in Houston and more like stumbling into some enchanted pocket garden just off Fondren and Woodway.

People proposed marriage there. Shoot, people got married there. People celebrated promotions there. People took their prom date to Vargo’s. Many took their mom there for a nice Mother’s Day brunch. People spent three hours over dinner there because it was just such a pleasant place to be. There was never any rush. Vargo's was one of those rare restaurants that encouraged you to linger. And they knew how to make their guests feel special.

After Al Vargo sold the restaurant in 1996, ownership changed several times, and although later operators tried to recapture its magic, Vargo’s gradually declined before closing in 2012 after 47 years in business. The property was later demolished and redeveloped into apartments, but its legacy remains firmly woven into Houston's collective memory.

This matchbook carries all of that wonderful, special-occasion energy. The cover design is wonderfully restrained. Deep black background with a flat finish. Gold lettering. Clean typography. It looks expensive without trying too hard—a pretty accurate description of Vargo's itself. There is some minor wear on the face of the matches on the front row, as well as the inside cover. Unlike many surviving examples, however, this matchbook still contains all its original matches.
